Unlike traditional depictions of the Nativity, Marcello Aversa’s Shadow Box Nativity features compositional elements that are distinctive to his unique style. True to Marcello’s heritage as a mattonaio, or terra-cotta brick maker, each Nativity is sculpted in terra-cotta and is composed of minute figurines that measure no more than four centimeters in height. Despite their small size, each figurine bears a unique expression that animates this sculpture. Compositional references to the Baroque style enrich the scene with movement and depth.

Two styles available:

The “Arco” Nativity Shadow Box depicts the birth of Jesus set upon the backdrop of a Roman arch.

The “Grotta” Nativity Shadow Box depicts the birth of Jesus set upon the backdrop of a natural grotto as one might find in Marcello’s hometown, Sorrento. The grotto is partially enclosed by a wall composed of miniature bricks that measure just a few millimeters in width. In order to maximize the realistic effect of this detail, Marcello bakes each brick individually before assembling the wall, just as one might do in real life.
